We were up and at 'em before sun up and on the road by 8:38 a.m. Temperature: 61 degrees with a fairly brisk wind out of the southwest. Did I mention... cloudy?
Clifford says "So long, see ya later" to Waco, Texas. (sniff, sniff)
We are south of Glenrose and there is evidence that a tornado or strong wind came through a small area on Hwy 144. Oh, there's a dead deer in the ditch.
Towns with funny names: Eulogy, Texas - must look that up.
Lots of RV parks in Grandbury, Texas. OH, THERE'S A LAKE HERE! That explains it. Lake Grandbury goes all around Grandbury.
10:15 AM - stopped at Glen Rose, Texas Wal-Mart parking lot and ate a bowl of cereal.
Texas has many old courthouses that each county that has one is very proud and protective of as historical monuments. Here's Granbury's:
Silverado on the Brazos - a very pretty ranchettes addition on Hwy 51 south of Weatherford, Texas.
Patches of bluebonnets here and there. Beautiful horses grazing in pastures of green, green grass.
11:22 AM - Weatherford, Texas. 63 degrees. still windy. Got gas - $3.35/gal. Streets in Weatherford are very rough. And to stay of Hwy. 51, we had to go around the square where there is another beautiful courthouse. Must be political corruption in Parker County... the highway is also in horrible condition. What are they spending their money on?
A friend of mine, Lisa Cockerell, lives not far from Weatherford in Peaster. She teaches school there. Our daughters, LaNae and Jennifer, played AAU basketball together when they were in high school. Jennifer played college ball at Texas Tech and Nae at the University of Oklahoma, of course. Jennifer is now a head basketball coach here in Texas. We had some great times traveling to the games back then.
We've seen quite a few horses, but this is the first one we've seen with a rider.
Springtown, Texas is a pretty little town, well, there's some pretty homes driving into the town.
12:16 PM - Decatur, Texas. Temp. 66 degrees.
Almost to the Texas-Oklahoma line at Gainesville, Texas as we pass the Texas Tourist Center on the left. Notice the flying flags... windy.
Clifford says "Howdy" to Oklahoma as we approach the Red River Bridge.
1:12 PM - crossed the Red River. That's the most water I have ever seen in the Red River.
It's time to rest a bit from fighting the wind. At least now that we're going north, it will be a tailwind. There are a lot of trucks stopped also, at this Rest Area. They're probably tired, too. We only have 106 miles to go before we get to our RV park in Norman. Yeah!! I talked to Mama a little bit ago and she said 40 mph wind is expected today there. Of course... it's Oklahoma! OKC is statistically more windy than Chicago and that call it the Windy City... wrong.
1:32 PM - rolling again - temperature: 70 degrees. Did I mention that the wind is blowing? Yeah!!! The wind is finally pushing us! Maybe we'll get better gas mileage.
There's a Polo Horse Ranch. Clifford wants to tell you that we are now entering Don's old stomping ground, the area where he was born and grew up. Clifford shows you the Turner Falls area here. There are a lot of horse farms in Oklahoma. This is the Washita (pronounced Wash-ee-tah) River where Don swam as a young boy. Yuk, you may say, that's dirt red muddy and you would be right, but he didn't care... he was a kid and a BOY. We're in Purcell, Oklahoma now, about 15 miles from our park. This is the train depot there below the Canadian River bridge. And this is the Canadian River. Looks like all the rivers and creeks in this part of Oklahoma are unusually full.
3:45 - We arrive! In the wind, Don get's the 5'er set up. Yes, I helped... a little. My role is to get the inside ready to live in, which means first and foremost to get Don's recliner ready so he can rest when he gets through. Check. Mission accomplished.
LaNae called and she, Lydia and Blaine are headed over to see us. Yeah! It's so good to see them. They have both grown sooo much. Boo is 10 and Rocket is 6. Rocket had a new remote controlled snake that he wanted to scare me with... he was so tickled when I jumped and hollered when I saw it crawling across the patio. I'll get a picture tomorrow. LaNae did not want her picture taken... whose kid is she???? Did she think I wasn't going to take her picture???? Has she met me??? Yes... I'm her mother.
Mike (picture coming later, sorry) was at the house cooking dinner for us (delicious) so we headed to their house to eat after calling Mama to let her know we were in town. Don is going to take his mother to her doctor appointment in the morning and I'll go spend the morning with Mama Trudy.
OK, I'm beat. Don's already in bed asleep... I hear him snoring so I'm headed there to join him in zzzz-land.
Blessings to all and thanks for the prayers for our safety. God answered them.
