Got a good night’s rest and we were on the road by 8:30 again this morning. We highly recommend EZ Daze RV Park, but it’s a little tricky to find. Maybe if we would update our GPS, we might have found it easier. Anyway, we took the 302 over to US 72 and headed for Georgia!
Sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky when we started and the 302 is divided four lanes! Yeah!
It’s about 9:50 here and I notice a little cloud. This place had quite a menagerie of animals and fowl.
We begin to notice that everything was covered with this vine type of stuff. I learned later on today that it is Kudzu and a great indication that you are in the south.
I’m not sure where this was, somewhere along US 72 in Mississippi, I think.
Our first siting of the Tennessee River. It was almost up to the bridge. Notice more clouds.
Today could be briefly described as: Crops, Rivers and Rain.
The corn was beautiful and looked just right to put on the table!
And a few amber waves of grain. (Wheat)
We saw more than one field of soy beans. This picture was taken at 11:50 AM.
And then I turned to look out the windshield at 12:01 PM…
12:03 PM – what happened to that cloudless sky we started out with?
It is 12:30 PM and we are approaching Huntsville, Alabama…. only a few miles away and we cross the Tennessee River again.
That’s ALOTAWATAH. And MORFAHLIN.
Huntsville looked like a nice town and Don really wanted to stop here. There’s a a lot of neat space stuff to see here. Alan Shepherd’s from Huntsville, AL.
Pictures don’t turn out so good in cloudy, rainy conditions.
Looking back at downtown Huntsville.
On US 72, we got a little ahead of the rain.
This farmer was trying his best to get the wheat harvested before the rain came.
We’re leaving the fields behind and headed to the mountains.
OK, this is where the story for today starts, Scottsboro, Alabama. We stopped to eat at Wendy’s about 1:45 PM.
While eating the storm was catching up with us, but we got back on the road before it arrived. Our plan was to exit US 72 and take Hwy 35 over to US 59 in Georgia. We did take Hwy 35. Crossed the Tennessee River, again. (You can see my reflection (arms) in the window.) Anyway, just before we got to…..
this bridge, Don saw a small sign that said, “13% GRADE AHEAD.”
We quickly decide, while crossing the bridge, that we are not at all interested in a 13% grade over the mountain to US 59… there must be a more desirable route…. and oh yes, where can we turn around, LORD!!!
The Lord (thank You again, Lord) provided a U-turn just over the bridge and we turned the Q around and headed … back across the Tennessee River. Notice bluer skies ahead of us. The storm is right on our tail.
They’re building a new bridge here.
Soon, we were back on US 72, headed for US 24 in Tennessee.
At 2:30 PM, we passed a nuclear power plant on the Tennessee River.
Did I mention that we saw a lot of water today?
We are now on US 24 headed for the exit to US 59 that will take us down to Georgia. Skies look good before us.
But on US 59, we turned south and the storm from the west caught up with us.
Who turned out the lights?? The wind is whipping really good/bad here and Don was holding on tight to the steering wheel. That’s our exit ahead!!! Yeah!! It’s not raining yet. Maybe we can make it to our park before it rains.
Just as we got on the minor hiway to our park, it started pouring down rain. When we got to the park I teased Don that we were going to flip a coin to see who was getting out to go to the office to check in, but I did it. Got soaked! Got checked in and a nice man escorted me back to the truck under an umbrella. We drove to our site and sat in the truck until the rain stopped.
This picture of our park was taken at 5:19PM, which was actually 4:19PM, but we lost an hour when we entered Georgia. We were all set up when I took these pictures.
We rested for a few minutes and then we headed out to see Mama Trudy!!! She had already called wanting to know if we were caught in the storm. While trying to find her place (again, not on our GPS), I was on the phone with her and my nephew who was at her apartment, checking on her. Trees were down everywhere in town. We finally found her apartment and it was sooooo good to see my sweet mama. Great to see nephew, Sammy, also. I haven’t seen him since 1991. (Pictures of him later… I forgot to take his picture in the excitement.) But I did get a picture of Mama Trudy before we left.
We left Mama’s about 8:30 PM. We were very tired and needing a good night’s rest. Tired but very thankful for a safe trip and for God’s protection and guidance.
Again, today… One day, Four states. (Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia!)
Psalm 91:11 “For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.”
Amen and Thank You, Jesus!!!
