Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - Prescott, Jerome, etc.

To begin with, let me just praise the Lord for bringing us safely back to Quail Run. We had no problems at all. We had no flat tires, blow-outs or brake failures, which you will understand our gratitude in that area when you read about our Thursday experience. There will be more praises to my God as I describe for you what this trip meant to me on several levels.

We drove away from friends at Quail Run around 10:00 AM. Don was very patient with me as I got things ready to go. Our final destination for today will be Flagstaff by way of Wickenburg on Az 89 to Prescott. Just past Prescott, we took 89A all the way to almost Flagstaff, seeing Jerome, Sedona and points along the way.

Coco's in Sun City looked like a good place for brunch, so we stopped. These lantana's there were so pretty and the food was good, too. Must tell you about a very cute little lady, 80ish, who came in with her son and his wife (I'm assuming). When asked what she wanted to eat, she said, "Something nutritious, I want something nutritious." Son begin to suggest Coco's delicious salads and chicken dishes to which she replied, "I want something nutritious. Do they have steak?" Obviously, his idea of nutritious and her idea of nutritious were two different things. I promise, she said the word nutritious at least eight times and I believe she settled on a scrumptous chicken fried steak.... very nutritious in her book. She was so cute, but please don't think I sat and stared at her... they sat down at the table right next to our booth and I couldn't help but over-hear the conversation. It was very entertaining, for me, but I am easily amused and I love the senior ones. You're shocked that I don't have a picture, right?

AZ 89 to Prescott was quite curvy in places as it climbed in elevation. A route not for the weak of stomach. (please excuse the reflection of the red & white stripes at the bottom of this picture) Of particular interest to us in Prescott was the Yvapai County Courthouse and Square right in the middle of town. We stopped, stretched our legs, walked around the courthouse taking pictures. There were lots of statues and plaques. This plaque is at the bottom of the above statue. From Prescott, we travelled AZ 89A, experiencing more curves and breathtaking views. By now, we are in snow elevation and I just had to have a picture of me in the snow in my flipflops. When I left the snow, I stepped directly into mud which completely covered my feet. Those flipflops are now in the back of the truck covered in dried mud.Don has a background of snow, as well, even though the tempature was in the low 50's. This pictures shows the winding hiway and a glimpse of the Painted Desert in the distance on the way to Jerome. Just past an old copper mine, conventiently located along the road was a scenic turnout. We stopped and took a few pictures. See how the highway ahead of us runs along the edge of the mountain? Another sightseer offered to take our picture after I had taken their family's pictures. In just a few minutes we will be driving on that highway you see behind us. As we are travelling toward Jerome, I caught this view of what I will call lower Jerome. As we entered Jerome, elevation 5200 feet, we noticed that the houses and buildings are built right on the side of the street with hardly any side walks. Main street reminds us of Eureka Springs, Ark. the way the buildings are so close to the street and the streets are so narrow. We enjoyed a pecan praline ice cream cone. Now begins the part of our trip where more and more the presence of God envelopes me as we come around a mountain and this view greets us as we approach Sedona. The beauty surrounds Sedona and I couldn't take enough pictures of what I later learned is Oak Creek Canyon. There's a thought that is growing in my heart and mind. Not very far out of Sedona, we were joined by the Oak Creek roaring right along beside the hiway. At Indian Gardens, we stopped and enjoyed the peace of the area and the sound of the moving water in the creek. We believe it's because of the references in the Bible of living water flowing from Jesus Christ that draws both Don and I to water. This setting was no different. Just across the 2-lane hiway was a general store and an art gallery with architure in keeping with the area, but still it represented commercialism that just didn't seem to belong here, so I didn't take a picture. At Indian Gardens, I could stand in one spot and take dozens of postcard pictures. Back in the truck and on the road, this is the last picture I took of Oak Creek Canyon red rock formations. (please excuse the bugs on the windshield who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.. the small fuzzy white spots). We pulled into Flagstaff a little before dark, got our motel room and had dinner at the Sizzler. It is the end of a perfect day together and we are thankful for a comfortable place to sleep, even though it's not our home on wheels.
