Mark 2:23-28
23 One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grain fields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat. 24 But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
Those Pharisees! Still trying to pour new wine into old wineskins! These religious leaders of the Law still do not realize or believe that the New Covenant of Grace is standing before them.
25 Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 26 He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”
27 Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”
You can just imagine the gasp of air they took when Jesus announced, “I, the Son of Man, am master even of the Sabbath!” Stiff-necked, long-robed, stoic faces – they probably almost fainted.
Did you catch all of verses 27 & 28? – Jesus explained what and who the Sabbath was created for and then in verse 28, He told them that He was the one who made the Sabbath: “I am master even over the Sabbath!” Did you catch it??? Jesus just told them that He was present at the creation of the earth! They didn’t even realize that God, the Creator, in the flesh, was standing right before them – speaking to them!
John 1:1 says: “In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and He was God.” He. He. He…. Jesus was The Word… from the beginning. Which means that the scriptures the Pharisees had been reading and “teaching” were inspired by Jesus!
Do we, when we read and study The Word, realize that we are reading God? Are we listening to what He is saying? Do we believe Him? Oh, LORD, help me to truly believe every word and let it change my life and the way I think. May I claim every promise and expect great and mighty things to happen through You in my life and heart and spirit!
What does Mark 2:23-28 say to you?
