DAY TWO
We were up early and soon driving along the western Michigan shore line of Lake Michigan.
Our first glimpse of the Mackinac (Suspension) Bridge.
But first we need want nourishment, so we stop at Darrow’s.
The next four pictures were taken at Darrow’s.
Corgi’s are my weakness, as far as fur pets go.
Mackinac Point Lighthouse. Yes, I climbed the spiral staircase to the top. No wait, at the top of the spiral staircase was a ladder. I determined quickly that I would not be climbing that ladder…. until…. as we waited our turn, an eighty plus year old lady descended said ladder. “OK,” said I, “I’m going up.” The spunky lady said, “Oh, yes, you have to go up!” I told her she had inspired me. So, up I went. Piece of cake. What a view!
But before my climb, we walked around the grounds and along the beach of Lake Huron.
The Mackinac Bridge separates Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
You know me, I had to get a close-up of the baby.
There’s my man… he’s loving being near the big water.
You bet!! I got my feet in Lake Huron water. Oooops, I forgot to take off my shoes. No, I didn’t… notice the rocks. I’m a tender foot.
This black lab got his feet and nose in the lake water and was loving it as much as me.
This gentleman is showing us the big, thick metal door to the entrance to the spiral staircase in the lighthouse…. that I climbed.
Here I go! Boy, was it hot in there!
Taken out a porthole part way up to the top.
Elaine took this right after the little 80 year old lady had come down that ladder. Do not mistaken that grimace on my face for a smile!
The Mackinac Bridge from the top of the lighthouse.
A ferry returning from Mackinaw Island.
Our guide at the top of the lighthouse. I would not want to have her job in that hot lighthouse in that outfit.
Another view taken as I mopped my face. There’s a tiny dot just above the water on the right side of the picture…. see it? That’s a parasail/parachute.
It’s time to descend. And YES, I descend backwards, as was recommended. And no, Elaine did not descend backwards. And no, I took no pictures while going up or down the stairs. Any more questions???
Yes, I was happy to be at ground level and feeling the cool breeze.
These two pictures, above and below, were taken through a glass display case. (Just one advantage of traveling with friends: we get to share pictures!)
While in Mackinaw, we took a little jaunt down to the shops in town to find this shop where they made fudge. That’s butter pecan on the marble slab being made. While in the fudge shop, Larry asked this little girl if she liked his yellow shoes. Poor little thing was traumatized and hides behind her daddy’s hand.
Larry, waiting in a jewelry shop while Elaine shopped for a necklace made out of Petoskey stone, the state stone of Michigan.
It’s finally time to make our way across the Mackinac suspension bridge.
Great view from here. A little windy, but a great view is worth it.
Lake Michigan on the left as we make our way toward the Upper Peninsula.
We never dreamed we would be this far north.
Our destination is the Soo Locks, but first our stomachs are getting our attention. Kathy and Elaine packed a great picnic meal that we feasted on for three days.
We make our way underneath the U.S. side of the International Bridge at Sault Ste. Marie on our way to the Soo Locks.
Gate to the Soo Locks.
We had a great view of the freighters in the locks from the observation deck. This shows both ends of a freighter as it waits for the water level to drop.
Ontario, Canada across the Soo Locks.
Private boats waiting to enter the lock.
In the next lock over, the Stewart J. Cort, a one thousand feet freighter… the first freighter of that size to go through the locks. Today was not the Cort’s first trip through.
When he saw me looking at him through my camera lens, I waved and he waved back! Don is standing on the ground below me but can’t see me, but sees the man in white waving and says to the person next to him, “He’s probably waving at my wife.” He knows me.
It’s time to move on down the road. Next stop… the Point Iroquois Lighthouse.
The view of Lake Superior from the top of the lighthouse. You guessed it. I climbed this one, too. I should have taken some window cleaner with me.
We didn’t stay up in the lighthouse very long as it was really hot up there. We walked the boardwalk out to the beach where I put my feet in the very cold water.
Elaine and I collected rocks from every beach we stopped at. There were plenty of stones here and I got some pretty ones for our grandsons.
Our day came to a close at Paradise, Michigan. We ate dinner at the shanty across the street from our motel.
As we walked back to the motel, Don and I spotted a chain saw artist down the highway a few feet, so we walked down and met Edwin Lafayette (LaFeet), the artist.Edwin is very talented and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting this pipeline worker/chainsaw artist.
As much as we are enjoying our time in Michigan, I look forward to forever with Jesus even more…..

When Christ, [who is] our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. (Colossians 3:4)
Our Lord, Jesus Christ, who is the Lamb of God and our Bridegroom shall return! Our true life is hidden in Him and when He appears in clouds of glory, then shall our own true lives be made apparent in Him. His life of obedience is ours (cf. Romans 5:19 and Hebrews 5:8). His death and suffering is ours. So too is His resurrection to new life. And even so, His revelation in robes of splendor at the final day shall be shared with every one of His saints. So put to death the earthly things until His coming and you shall be crowned in His glory. (Put God first in everything.)

UP is beautiful, the bridge is gigantic and kind of scary to cross.
