The Buck Battle of July 19, 2011

We got a really nice rain today!  A little more than half inch of that wonderful wet stuff that falls from the sky.  Not only did it get the parched ground a nice drink, it brought the temperatures down.  The fawns were frisky and playing in the orchard.  And then, the patriarch of the herd spotted an intruder.100_5057

“This is war!” 100_5058

The younger buck had the misfortune of entering the orchard from the thicket with three does, which evidently did not ‘belong’ to him.  They ran across the orchard toward each other and BAM!  100B5091

When the fight started, the rest of the herd disappeared into the thicket on the other side of the fence. 100B5097

This battle covered about half of the orchard.100B5112 100B5122 100B5130 100B5141

They fought for a good twenty minutes and then the youngster retreated… 100B5150

Defeated. 100B5160

He really wanted to challenge the champion again, but kept the fence between them.  The champ is barely visible behind the tree.100B5178

We were really glad they didn’t get their horns locked together.  The ending to that situation is a bullet for both of them.

What a cool experience to witness!
