We got a really nice rain today! A little more than half inch of that wonderful wet stuff that falls from the sky. Not only did it get the parched ground a nice drink, it brought the temperatures down. The fawns were frisky and playing in the orchard. And then, the patriarch of the herd spotted an intruder.
The younger buck had the misfortune of entering the orchard from the thicket with three does, which evidently did not ‘belong’ to him. They ran across the orchard toward each other and BAM!
When the fight started, the rest of the herd disappeared into the thicket on the other side of the fence.
This battle covered about half of the orchard.
They fought for a good twenty minutes and then the youngster retreated…
He really wanted to challenge the champion again, but kept the fence between them. The champ is barely visible behind the tree.
We were really glad they didn’t get their horns locked together. The ending to that situation is a bullet for both of them.
What a cool experience to witness!
