Double Date Friday

Don has the best ideas for Date Day Friday.  Today, we decided to double-date with Rick and Wendy.

We left about 10:30 AM.... Our goal:  a Meers Burger and any and all sites and scenes in between.  Anadarko, OKThe first site was these teepees at the Southern Plains Indian Museum.  100_1958We didn't stop... just kept driving toward that hamburger that we've heard so much about.

We passed this old rock barn on the road to Meers.  Don slowed down stopped so I could take this picture.old rock barn before we got to MeersAbout 12:30 PM, we arrive at our destination:  Meers Store and Restaurant.where we ate lunchIt doesn't look like much, but it's a very famous place.100_1972The water tower looks quite odd with a windmill on top.100_1973Don has a foot in Oklahoma at the front door of the restaurant.Don, with a foot in Oklahoma going in the door of the restaurantA little history of this place.  Not included in this plaque is the fact that this restaurant is sitting on top of a fault.  There is even a seismograph machine inside.100_1975Rick and Wendy under the big sign hanging on the side of the restaurant.Rick and Wendy FuryWe saw a lot of service men and families at Meers today, all from Ft. Sill in nearby Lawton, OK.  We decided that today must have been a graduation-from- basics-day.God bless our troopsInside the restaurant was this scale with a pretend hamburger being weighed.inside the restaurantWe waited in line for close to an hour.waiting in lineRick and Wendy waiting for our food.Rick and WendyWendy, Don and I had the Meers Burger with Freedom Fries.  Rick had a huge hot dog with cole slaw and onion rings.  No wait, Wendy didn't have FF's.  The food was pretty good, but we probably won't go back... unless it's for the peach or cherry cobbler and homemade ice cream.  Now that was outstanding!  It was gone so fast, I didn't even get a picture.at Meers Restaurant 08-2009

Since we were in the Wichita Mountains area, we decided to take a drive through.  We saw our first bison right near the road.  we spot our first bisonNext... the prairie dog city.  They were everywhere!  "Whoa, it's stopping... if one door opens, I'm out of here!"  (Of course, I zoomed.)Probably passing the word by the prairie dog secret method. Our next stop was Rush Springs, where they were having their annual Watermelon Festival Parade.  We arrived a little too late, but saw a few horses and riders and this horse-drawn wagon.Watermelon Festival Parade in Rush Springs, OKWe found what we were looking for... a watermelon roadside stand.  Behind were two beautiful quarter horses, who were hanging around for free melons.100_2088Across from the fruit stand.across from the watermelon standMy date and Rick and Wendy in the fruit and vegetable stand.watermelon stand roadsideMore horse pictures.  Well, he just kept posing for me.  Isn't he just beautiful?beautiful100_2093Down the road came this 1956 Chevy, which we decided had probably been in the parade.1956 ChevyShortly, with our yellow-meat watermelon and various fruit purchases, we were back at the park, tired, but happy we had this day together.  Who knew there was such neat places to go and see within less than two hours from where we are parked.

It's Friday, already?

It's been quite a week, especially yesterday.  We've had lots of rain. 100_1949 The usually low Canadian River has water flowing.100_1950

Monday and Tuesday, we took Mama, first, to have her carotid arteries scanned and then Tuesday to the heart surgeon for a consultation.  Dr. McCurdy told us that the blockage in one artery had reduced from 75% to 60% and blockage in the other from 10% to hardly any blockage, in a year  We were/are thrilled!!  But she's been working at it.  The report from her doctor visit last week was that her cholesterol was excellent.  Tammy, Dr. McCurdy commented on how cute she was when she giggled and gave her a big hug, telling her that she doesn't need surgery, she doesn't even need a stint and she's not a stroke candidate.  More giggles.  When we got back to her apartment, as I was bringing in something from the truck, I found her standing in the kitchen clapping her hands.... oh to have had my camera.  I asked her if she was praising the Lord and she said, with a giggle.... "Yes!!!"  What a precious lady is my mother.

Well, that must have just been too much excitement for her.  Wednesday, she felt wretch-ed all day.  Light headed, sick at her stomach, etc.  Dr. McCurdy did remind her that she is 91 and just may have to live with a little light-headedness.  She said, "I can live with it."

Thursday, yesterday, she was much better when I went over to spend a few hours with her while Don met his appointments.

Oh, how God used Don yesterday.  He was on a roll as he visited with three pastors in the area regarding Christian Resort Ministries, Int'l and starting free medical clinics in their churches/missions.  Don explained that CRM offers the chaplain training for those who believe God is leading them to be a part of the clinic ministry.  There are so many resources in this area and we just can't believe that these churches here don't utilized what they have available... free diabetic screening, etc., to get people in their communities inside their doors and present Jesus and His Good News to them.  Some people have never heard of Him, they know something is missing from their lives, but they don't know what it is.  It's the churches responsibility to find every venue possible to introduce Jesus Christ to them.  I sound like Don now. :-)  Anyway, he had a great day and was successful, praise the Lord, in getting all three pastors connected to Bill Sissons who will help them get their clinics started.  Oh, I almost forgot.... the last pastor Don visited invited him to preach in their church this coming Sunday evening!  God blessed Don with such favor today and there was an instant Bond between him and Pastor Bruce.  Woodland Hills Baptist Church is an alive, vital church community getting outside of their four walls and serving and reaching others for the Kingdom of Christ.  It's such a treat to see people excited about the Lord and wanting to be a part of His plans for the world they live in.

Thank you so much for praying for us this summer and for those who help us financially... many blessings are prayed for you daily, also.  We could not do this ministry without you and we just praise God that we have met such wonderful, God-loving people who have caught the vision of what God has called us to do.  Thank you for your words of encouragement... we love hearing from you.  We love you all and long to see you again.  Do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do for you.

Please continue to pray for us as we prepare to travel back to Casa Grande, Arizona the end of September.  There are still several appointments we have while here, also.  We will leave this area the first week in September and travel to Texas to spend a few weeks there with daughter and family and then head from our winter destination.

Pray that we will not miss one single thing that God has planned for us.

Pray for our health, especially Don's.  Well, mine, also, as I do not have medical insurance, but mainly, we just need to be healthy to do what God has called us to do.

We are so incredibly blessed.

"Precious Lord"

We've had a busy week and I promise, I will post our week soon.  However, I just received and email from a sweet friend at Sunscape, Dorie, and I want to share it with you.  Tremendous story:

THE BIRTH OF THE SONG 'PRECIOUS LORD'

Back in 1932, I was a fairly new husband. My wife, Nettie and I were living in a little apartment on Chicago 's south side. One hot August afternoon I had to go to St. Louis where I was to be the featured soloist at a large revival meeting. I didn't want to go. Nettie was in the last month of pregnancy with our first child. But a lot of people were expecting me in St. Louis . I kissed Nettie good-bye, clattered downstairs to our Model A and, in a fresh Lake Michigan breeze, chugged out of Chicago on Route 66.

However, outside the city, I discovered that in my anxiety at leaving, I had forgotten my music case. I wheeled around and headed back.

I found Nettie sleeping peacefully. I hesitated by her bed; something was strongly telling me to stay. But eager to get on my way, and not wanting to disturb Nettie, I shrugged off the feeling and quietly slipped out of the room with my music.

The next night, in the steaming St. Louis heat, the crowd called on me to sing again and again. When I finally sat down, a messenger boy ran up with a Western Union telegram. I ripped open the envelope. Pasted on the yellow sheet were the words:

YOUR WIFE JUST DIED.

People were happily singing and clapping around me, but I could hardly keep from crying out. I rushed to a phone and called home. All I could hear on the other end was 'Nettie is dead. Nettie is dead.'

When I got back, I learned that Nettie had given birth to a boy. I swung between grief and joy. Yet that same night, the baby died. I buried Nettie and our little boy together, in the same casket. Then I fell apart.

For days I closeted myself I felt that God had done me an injustice. I didn't want to serve Him anymore or write gospel songs. I just wanted to go back to that jazz world I once knew so well. But then, as I hunched alone in that dark apartment those first sad days, I thought back to the afternoon I went to St. Louis . Something kept telling me to stay with Nettie. Was that something God? Oh, if I had paid more attention to Him that day, I would have stayed and been with Nettie when she died.

From that moment on I vowed to listen more closely to Him.. But still I was lost in grief. Everyone was kind to me, especially one friend. The following Saturday evening he took me up to Maloney's Poro College , a neighborhood music school. It was quiet; the late evening sun crept through the curtained windows.

I sat down at the piano, and my hands began to browse over the keys. Something happened to me then I felt at peace. I felt as though I could reach out and touch God. I found myself playing a melody, once into my head they just seemed to fall into place:

'Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn, through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light, take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.'

The Lord gave me these words and melody, He also healed my spirit. I learned that when we are in our deepest grief, when we feel farthest from God, this is when He is closest, and when we are most open to His restoring power.

And so I go on living for God willingly and joyfully, until that day comes when He will take me and gently lead me home.

[I did not know the story behind the song, Precious Lord, and I'm grateful to Dorie for sharing it with me.]

Helping Hands

Bright and early, Rick and Wendy showed up to do a couple of jobs on the "Q" for us.  They just got home from Florida last night, so we figured they would sleep in, but we were wrong.

First, Rick fixes the new cable connections.Rick work on the 'Q'Next, our good neighbor and friends, climbs up top of the "Q" for Don to replace the damaged-by-hail vent cover.  I have a really "good" picture of Rick ascending the ladder, but because I'm such a nice person, I will not post it.  ;-)

Rick removing old vent cover.Rick removing old vent coverFor a few days we were what our friend, Dennis, called 'trailer trash' because we had something repaired on the "Q" with tape.  You can see all the white places where hail hit the vent.  We still can't believe we had not damage to the "Q" itself.for a few days, we were true trailer trashRick attaching the new "guaranteed unbreakable" (we left the sticker on) vent cover.Rick attaching the new 'guaranteed unbreakable' vent coverWendy held the ladder as Rick descended... task completed.

Thank you so much, Rick and Wendy, for your willing hearts and helping hands.  We love you and we are so blessed to have you here in Oklahoma with us this summer.

Sunday Blessings

************************************

From Brazil!  Wow!  I would like to welcome FE SALUD VIDA as a follower of Bakers' Blessings.  I pray you enjoy our journey.

*****************************************

Our morning at Woodland Hills Baptist Church was a wonderful time of worship and learning.  The music was astonishing.  The message by visiting preacher, Jay Badry, Colorado Springs, Colorado, was challenging.  I wish I had it on MP3 or something.  He caused us to look at Mark 10:46-51 in a fresh way.  Don and I both were blessed.

After lunch at Pei Wei's, we visited Mama Trudy for a few hours.  She's feeling pretty good today for which we thank God.  Tomorrow, we take her for a scan of her carotid arteries to find out if the blockage has increased or decreased since last July.  We are praying for a decrease.

Tonight, Don and I went over to Tuttle to Snow Hill Baptist Church.  Pastor Todd Littleton is someone Don has known for quite a few years.  The time was very casual and interactive and good.

As I type tonight, I've received and sent several text messages from my granddaughter, who just can't 000_0008seem to tell me enough how much she loves me and wishing me sweet dreams.  Do you have any idea what a blessing that is to me?  She mistakenly thought she could convince me that she loves me "more."  I explained, "that isn't possible."  "It's like this, Darling, I loved you before you were born and I've loved you ALL your life, so I love YOU MORE.  Anyone who gets the privilege of loving someone BEFORE they are born, gets the privilege of loving them MORE!"  But who's counting? :-)

We are so blessed.

Don's trip to Iowa, Illinois with Bill Sisson

We got the CD from Bill with all the pictures he took on their trip to Iowa.  Mission:  to start free clinics along the Mississippi River.

During the week they were in Iowa, Dennis took them along the Mississippi River.  Residents of these river houses will likely be patients one day in a free clinic that God provides for them as they learn that there are those who care about their physical needs as well as their spiritual needs.river houseriver house2A picture of a map of the Mississippi River and the towns along the river.  SV101522SV101570IMG_0238SV101590This statue of Liberty was placed in the Port of Burlington by the American Boy Scouts.SV101593The bridge at Burlington.SV101592The mighty Mississippi River.SV101544One of the many lock and dams along the Mississippi.SV101525All river traffic must pass through the locks.  Here is a tug boat pushing a barge out of a lock.tug2
